Dr. Virgil Cole

Dr. Virgil Cole joined the Morgan County Charter School System as the superintendent in July 2020.  Prior to this appointment, he served as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, director of human resources, principal, and assistant principal at both the high school and elementary school levels as an administrator with Glynn and Henry County Schools.

Dr. Cole is involved throughout the Morgan County community, volunteering time to and providing opportunities for all children.  He is the past-president of the Rotary Club of Morgan County.  Through his involvement with a variety of professional organizations, Dr. Cole serves public education in many capacities.  He is a former member of the Georgia Association of School Personnel Administrators and is currently serving as a member of the Georgia School Superintendents Association.  In addition, he serves as the 2023 chair of the Northeast Georgia RESA Board of Controls as well as a Trustee on the Georgia School Board Risk Management Fund Board.

Before beginning his 27-plus year career in education, Dr. Cole was a police officer and a D.A.R.E. instructor for the City of Conyers, where he worked extensively in schools teaching lessons on the dangers of drugs, peer pressure, etc.  It was during this time that he discovered a passion for education.

Having already earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Georgia, where he was a two-year football letterman and was awarded academic All-SEC honors, Dr. Cole decided to change his career path and pursue a teaching certification at Mercer University.  He began his career in education as a teacher and coach with Rockdale County Public Schools.

Dr. Cole is a true life-long learner.  In addition to his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Georgia, he has earned master’s, specialist and doctorate degrees in educational leadership at Georgia State University.  He has also successfully completed the Superintendent Professional Development Program and Human Resources Institute. In 2022, he was recognized by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame’s University of Georgia Chapter with the Post-Graduate Achievement Award. This past April, he was named a 2023 Georgia School Superintendent Association President’s Award recipient.

When not at work, Dr. Cole loves running and working out, reading for pleasure and professionally, trying new restaurants, going to movies, attending sporting events and spending time with family and friends. Virgil and his wife, Mollie, have four children – Taylor, Kate, James, and Mary-Liz.
