Our guidance program at MCPS is comprehensive and developmentally appropriate. Every K-2 classroom receives at least 10 classroom guidance lessons per year taught by the school counselors. All K-2 classrooms receive a counselor introduction lesson, three Think First, Stay SafePersonal Safety lessons as well as a lesson on drug free awareness during the month of October as part of our observance of Red Ribbon Week. Kindergarten classes are taught five additional lessons using the Second Stepcurriculum which provides empathy training and teaches impulse control and anger management. First grade classes are taught three Career Awareness lessons focusing on the first grade career pathways which are (1) Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security, and (3) Transportation, Distribution and Logistics. In addition, first grade receives lessons on Coping with Conflict . Second grade classes are taught three Career Awareness lessons focusing on the second grade career pathways which are (1) Arts, AV Technology and Communications, (2) Health Sciences, and (3) Education and Training. Kelso’s Choice Conflict Managementfor children curriculum is used to teach an additional unit on resolving minor problems and recognizing the difference between big and small problems.

In addition, small group counseling is offered to teach skills and offer support to students. Small groups focus on a variety of topics such as stress management, self concept, self control and peer relations as well as family changes and grief. Individual counseling is offered as well.
As school counselors, we work closely with parents and teachers to provide support and offer education and suggestions. We have many wonderful community resources that can help families keep their students healthy and safe. We are happy to provide information to parents to help them utilize these services.
